I don't know about getting your "site" in trouble, as in hurting your rankings, by sending out spam.

I only know that it is one part of how web mail providers like yahoo / gmail / hotmail might filter out junk mail.

I think microsoft is suing a Russian spammer again. They already won a multimillion dollar judgment against him a few years back.

This time, he has opened up several thousand (or hundreds of thousands of) hotmail accounts. Then he sent out an email to all of them. They were filtered as spam.

Then he went into the spam folders of those hotmail accounts and un-marked them as spam, so that the microsoft filters would think they were legitimate emails that had been filtered out by mistake.
