I disagree, what is the difference between; a link from a well written press release and a good article published on article and guide sites...

Both would be published with links back to the site in the context of good copy - all helping with the SEO performance.

Guide and article sites may get small penalties from time to time, but the general high quality of content tends to overcome the flotsam.
