I'm not above a $50 bill changing hands. But I think the better links are beyond that. The links from the big authority sites that don't take advertising and won't take $50 - and if you get a link from them, the competitors are left scratching their heads. Those links are 'free' but require the shift in thinking from volume links to 'one up' and 'what do I have to do to convince this site to give me a link'. That's the approach I tend to take these days. My link building volume has dropped like a stone - I don't get many links anymore. But every one I do get I believe is worth a ton. It's also a bit of a shift in thinking from Google's perspective. If we get good links, then we can just let Google figure out that these are fabulous links. How they do that, I don't need to bother with. (of course, there's always grey areas amongst all this. I see people rank with paid links everyday).
