---- Etiquette of asking for a link...

From my experience as a website developer, the procedure of generating quality links is one of the most interesting parts of the job.

The experience always starts with lots of research, and then there is the sending out of personalized e-mail requesets for the placing of a link from a certain page of thier site to my particualr site. Whenever I ask for a link, I always let them know why I feel that our two sites would compliment each other, and I also try to explain a little bit about how links benefit the "big picture" of bringing more traffic to both of our sites.

My question is this, is there anything else that I could do or say to "encourage" the other site's webmaster to link to my particular site? Also, what do you usually say to make other webmasters to understand how important it is for them to exchange (or sometimes donate) a link?

Any success or horror stories out there?

Links are a major part of our world, and yet we don't discuss them that much here.

P.S. I noticed in another post somewhere here that the word "links" is a "poison" word; what does that mean, and why would this be?
