That works out at $2000 wasted, which could have gone on something else. Sites lose a ton of links all the time and without even realising it, or checking to see if they still have the links. It's like buying an advert, and then not checking it's roi - many don't. $2000 spent elsewhere could buy quite a lot of links, PPC or PFI, so why risk using outsiders who stand to gain whether you lose or not. And at least you would have something set in stone. It's true though.
Ok, and all those links suddenly drop you, (which isn't uncommon) then you are left with nothing for your cash.
