It sounds like maybe you got links on "link pages" that were "hidden", that is not well linked, on the host (selling) site? Is that right? If so, wouldn't that make a difference in the outcome of the test?
Take it from Uncle crush. Stop your link begging requests and if you do please get them on an internal page that is well linked from within the site. G can devalue links pages.
