Whatever the link source (info site, directory, industry forum, etc.) emphasis should be put on the value of the converted link/lead AND the likelihood of the lead converting. That, IMHO, is what should be the rule of behavior. IF incoming traffic from WebsiteA is highly targeted to your market AND if the value of a lead converting from that market it high - go after that first, and be prepared to pay a bit more (if there's a fee). 1 lead that converts every 3 years, that is worth $10,000.00 in business, justifies a different willingness to risk a few dollars for a link than 1 lead that converts in the same period for a $89.00 sale. It's the prefiltering of the inbound traffic and the end-market value that should be the focus. This should also help set market prices over time that make sense for all parties.
