leosghost - thanks. I use ubuntu but I'll see what I can find.

hoople - I already use RDP to connect to both local and remote servers. I don't think it would be helpful in my wife's situation as her use of the software is intensive rather than occassional. :(

There is also the problem, on Windows 2000, that copy/paste does not work across RDP from linux. It used to but something now prevents it - possibly an upgrade in something or other (using klipper here - maybe it was a different app I used before).
