Actually, I felt that 0.9 was faster than 0.8 -- I just upgraded for the same reason as you.

I agree with you that the new theme is pretty horrible, but the old one and many others are still available for download. I don't like the mess of stuff in the status bar, either, but I'm hoping that might get better in the next few months.

The pagerank extension is indeed nifty, and works as expected.
