This has been one of the biggest factors holding back the growth of Opera IMHO. I don't hold the keys to any inside knowledge on this decision. As a long-time Opera user I've witnessed a lot of resistance to this browser in the global market, particularly in the Asian markets. (Opera has grown well beyond being merely a Norwegian company in the last 10 years.) Even though the ad supported version was innocuous to me, people labeled Opera crippleware or shied away because of it.
