In case I'm not the only ignorant one, here's from the Google Cache of eol.ca (the page is a 404): Adjective & adverb Fred Elliott told Maureen that her jars on the shop shelves were skew-whiff. He proceeded to turn them so the labels faced out. Origins: mid 18th cenutry
OK, you got me that "skewwiff" word. I thought it was probably some hip-hop thing I was just too old to know about. So I did what any self respecting geek would do, I searched on Google. Only 109 pages. There now, I feel much better.
SKEW-WHIFF
Also: SKEW-WIFF
Colloquial
Askew, awry, to one side; crooked(ly), confused(ly).
From: SKEW adjective & adverb + WHIFF/WIFF noun or verb.
