I would focus on the primary purpose of your site... whether that is ecom or content blogging, and build the site around that solution.
If the primary reason for the site is to sell stuff, find the right ecommerce platform, and drop Wordpress into a /blog/ directory or subdomain of its own, theme it to match the ecommerce.
We use CS-Cart on the domain root for a site we manage. WordPress in the /blog/ directory. The site used to be Joomla with a commerce extension, and it was just too chunky for us. Didn't seem to suit either purpose (blog or commerce) well.
Reverse the method if needed. Put the blog on the root of the domain if that's your primary site purpose. Drop a commerce app into a directory.
I suggest keeping the two separate though... use a good blogging software to blog, use a good commerce app to manage sales. Focus on whats most important for the root of the domain.
