I think it depends on what they're after to be honest. Some kids want to write. Prose. Some kids want to code. I know a kid who started in on trying to optimize algos to find prime numbers when he was 11. To him, it was the technical aspect that appealed. But I know another kid who started writing plays when she was 10. To her, it's the writing and communication that appealed. So in the first case, having a blog might be an excuse to play with HTML and learn web development. In the second case, the technical aspects are just an obstacle to getting things done. These kids are both roughly your generation (one is 14 now and the other is 24). But as with all generations, different strokes for different folks.
