To those considering a static cache: I have had great results using a reverse proxy (specifically, apache's mod_cache) to serve up the 'static dynamic' content. The savings on server resources and loading times are huge, at the cost of some minor freshness issues. Using mod_cache, I managed to slash two to three hundred milliseconds off my load time.
Ofcourse, you wouldn't want to do this on frequently updating sites, but the benefits to more static and content-heavy sites can be enormous.
