however i had already tried that off-left technique and it doesn't work for some reason.

i had also tried the text-indent and padding methods you described but they both fail with images off:

the css background means you lose the alt text so it's invisible with images off/css on.

With images instead of background images

i also tried this technique but there is the css-disabled echo effect here.
