the <b> and <i> elements are purely presentational and are therefore semantically worthless.
if it's not deprecated it should be considered poor practice to use these.

How is an image alt attribute treated when the image is within a <h> element?

when using the Semantic Data Extractor:
the alt attribute text is surrounded by square brackets so i wonder if that somehow indicates less trust in the semantic information provided.

maybe the easy answer is still the best here, though.

There is so much you can do with styling these days that jumping through those hoops just so you can have a graphic heading is a bit much for me. I know what you mean though, there are many font styles that cannot be replicated via CSS.

sometimes it is simply not your decision to make.
