---- What's difference between Information Architecture and Theme Pyramids?

Hopefully this is the right place for this question.

I've be hired to create a SEO strategy for a large publications website. From my perspective, one of the biggest problems this site has is that there is a very poor theme pyramid and because of it the the site structure and it's navigation has developed dysfunctionally and it's very confusing to site visitors as well as search engines.

One of the web designers has mentioned that Information Architecture is a good process in the redesign of the navigation. Seeing how I've always used theme pyramids to design a sites structure I just making sure that I'm not off on my judgement.
I guess I'm coming to WebmasterWorld community to help me figure out which is the better route to take.

I've used my process so long, I'm not really sure what Information Architecture is suppose to accomplish. Or maybe I'm already doing it and it's just being called something else.

Thanks in advance. DTD
