There's an anecdote about an architect that designed a building with no sidewalks. After a few months, they put concrete over the areas where the grass was worn bare.
Afraid I can't really add anything to the discussion, but when I read this I had to drop in - This is basically how the university I work at does things. That's where people walk? Put a sidewalk there. I try to transfer this method to other areas of life when I can.
