Surely, the logical conclusion to all this should then be:

Long words that are shortened by simply removing letters eg. approx. should be marked up with [abbr] (with the title attribute defining the word in full)

Initialisms (BBC etc.) AND acronyms (RADAR etc.) should be marked up with [acronym] (with the title attribute defining the term in complete words)

CSS should then be used to distinguish the pronunciation of each occurence of the acronym tag for screen readers.
