An awesome introduction to a very important and much under-discussed topic.

The only point I would slightly quibble with is:

Visitors don't like reading a lot of text.

It really depends on who your visitors are. Some visitors like reading a lot of text. (Otherwise online newspapers would have fallen flat a long time ago, right?)

Perhaps the best compromise is to find some way to offer different visitors text-heavy and text-lite versions of the same content. Two columns would handle this kind of situation in a very simple way - with a picture and large font bullet point summary on one side and detailed paragraphs on the other.
