I also work as a filmmaker, and my early background included black and white photography. When color became de rigueur in cinematography, I continued to use light as if I were shooting in black and white. This approach provides increased separation in grey values, which works better in color too. It makes sense for graphic design also. The Wired Magazine approach to design, of dark purple (or red) type on black backgrounds, doesn't really work for anybody. (edited by: Robert_Charlton at 4:37 am (utc) on May 24, 2002)
ergophobe - Great post. Thank you. To add a thought, I feel that designing for color blind viewers will improve design in general.
