I'm no expert, but it seems to me that your problem lies in the area of "charset"
Example:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">

If the rendered web page is not on the same wavelength as the Db Table, what you describe is quite possible.
