---- XP Pro does auto restart on every shutdown.

My XP Pro will auto restart every time I try to shut it down. So my only recorse its to wait for the beginning of the restart and hold in the power switch till it stops..

Occasionally it will do a major fail may once or twice a day and say it has a fatal error, and totally reboot without warning.. I do not know it these are related.. I can live with the occasional reboot, but not with the restart..

It is a real pain when you go to shut down and it says updating do not turn off.. if you leave it for the update and go to bed of course when the update is done it will shut down then restart and when you get up in the morning its still running..

Does anyone have any ideas short of re-installing the operating system over the old... my understanding is that I can do that without loosing all my current setups..

Is this true...

Thanks
Tom
