I'm not sure if this will work, it depends on server and XP using the same HDD file system, but:

Try booting from your XP drive, then check the server drive for errors and viruses.

You could also delete the pagefile. I had a similar problem restoring a Win2K system from a Ghost backup. Deleting the pagefile caused the OS to create a new one.
