I know alibaba, no, can't comment on why it's causing a crash.

Yeah, 512MB is running kind of thin, especially if you're running Vista or Win 7. You can try, if you haven't,

- make sure no other applications are running
- disable Javascript (which may disable functions on alibaba, but will at least help debug the issue)
- disable images

Ram is cheap these days, I ran on 1GB for a while and it just wasn't enough, 2GB seems to be sufficient, but I have at least one other power hungry app open at all times (Photoshop, Flash, others,) as well as a couple other smaller apps. Buy as much as you can afford.
