why do we need these kind of sites at all?
We don't - because we are webmasters.
The rest of the planet, for inexplicable reasons, does not share our passionate interest.
I wouldn't say the reasons are "inexplicable." The rest of the planet are not webmasters, and don't see the Internet as a complex web of routers, servers, search engines, and developers.
They see convenience, easy access to friends, photos, videos, television, and movies, and more importantly, they see fun.
Myspace has simply been caught, surpassed and almost eliminated in the social networking game. They are seeking to reinvent themselves, but it may be too late.
