The problem is, the migration would have to happen en masse, all at once. It's a great idea, but facebook probably just has too much momentum.
Facebook can die overnight. Remember myspace? Maybe just old folks remember that :).
The difference here is - and I think a crucial factor - may be the privacy. Early adopters I think care about that. If they can get people onboard due to that, they have a chance.
It's not a sure thing by any means. But the opportunity exists and they have the mechanism in place. Whether it happens is still a lot of luck and marketing.
