I would say proper SMO can be done only through concerted effort through multiple channels. Simply Digg or adding Del.icio.us doesn't do any good and at the same time creating corporate profiles in Second Life or similar sources doesn't serve the purpose either. While a profile in Second Life can actually help your brand, public bookmarking services like Digg or Delicious can help spread the message around.

Your message gets more importance when your brand is established and again your brand gets established when you are able to communicate with your target market by sending proper messages. So its all interrelated.
