Consider it like a normal promotion - target group and all that stuff. So you know which topics you would like to talk about. Of course the reporter probably want to talk about something completely different - but if you can have just a little influence on it... you get more out of it. Of course don't answer something completely different than what you are asked for. When my team went on national TV - the vice captian was very keen on explaining how expensive the hobby was and how much he had paid for his equipment. NOT very smart - who the f*** is going to start a sport that cost 5000 $ +? Instead of focusing on how cheap it could be done! Be aware of topics to avoid or handle with care too.
Having tried this stuff with one of my own hobbies (Hardball - bbguns) on national and local TV (Denmark) - I think I would like to give you my 2 cents.
