One comment by DrDoc stuck with me: I'm still a fan of liquid layouts. They're definitely more difficult to make, but if you do a good job you'll have some longevity to your design. Someday today's 800x600 minimum resolution is going to go the way of 640x480...

fluid layouts do not automatically mean you can't use fixed width elements ;)
You can certainly make fluid layouts that restrict things like the width of paragraphs and other elements so that even at extreme widths your site design is still legible and functional.
