My reason for going more often with fixed than fluid has more to do with the fact that people are increasingly using very large screens and high resolutions - fluid works well for smaller screens/lower resolutions. Fluid sites can look a bit weird on those screens - kind of short and squat - and very wide lines of text are harder to read.

It's difficult (for me anyway) to make it fliud and still look 'right' at all widths.
