The search engines themselves do not appear to have been hacked, since they are reachable by the numeric IP addresses of their web servers. The attack appears to be targeting search engines but not other kinds of sites. For example, Microsoft's MSN web portal site is reachable by Internet users but its MSN search is not. Does this phenomenon extend beyond search engines?
The DNS system that matches named addresses to IP addresses appears to have been hacked in some way, making many of the world's major search engines, including Google, Yahoo, and MSN Search unreachable this morning.
