Should I "safely" assume that these emails come as a result of one of these companies spamming me/selling my email address to spammers? I don't see how else anyone could have gotten this address since it is not easy to guess.

Or just poor security and a virus.

One company I worked for, one of the field staff didn't follow the rules to protect his laptop and the entire address book got out into the wild.
