The document is not valid UTF-8

All it takes is one character to sneak in somewhere. Does it show you the character (probably looking like normal text wrapped around The Dread Question Mark), or did the validator go into one of those moods where it flatly refuses to continue?

If the information in the database is now being processed correctly, I don't see any reason to mess with it :)

And then there's the BOM issue...
