Well, just don't count them out yet... microsoft might take ages, but their pockets are deep and moving faster "from being evil to good" than some others vice versa :)

Yet building complete applications based on net services and putting your whole business on that idea might not be a wise step.

Bandwidth grew from very thin to small and with the fast growth of data (think HD movies, eg.) an ubiquitous internet for day-2-day work and play is just not there for such a major shift in mentality.
