Regarding dropping already indexed pages:
Heh, I wish I'd known this last week!
I had a VERY well indexed site on alltheweb. Like hundreds of pages which linked to my other sites, helping them get higher in the rankings, etc. However not a SINGLE page of the site was indexed in Lycos. It ranks in the top ten on google, yahoo, etc., been around for years, has hundreds of backlinks, but simply could not get FAST to even look at it. So I decided to break down and pay (via Lycos) to have the home page included in their FAST index. Within days EVERY link from that domain on alltheweb disappeared! This has hurt my other pages which were linked from this domain as well! And although the home page has been spidered a few times it has YET to show up on Lycos (zero pages found from the domain via their index check method) or any other FAST SE despite my written complaints!
This will be the last time I venture into paying FAST for anything!
Meanwhile a page I submitted from another domain at the same time, and which was in Lycos already, but not the other FAST SE's now shows up TWICE in Lycos. The original which they found on their own comes up around #8 for my primary keyword and the exact same link (with their embedded tracking code) which I PAID to submit comes up around 80 something!
Guess that PROVES it's utterly useless to pay for submission! I had MUCH better luck getting indexed quicker (especially on ATW) by entering a free submit! Overall, I've had very similar experience with PFI on Inktomi.
