From what I've learned this DOES NOT MEAN that the company is recrawling and refreshing half of its database each day.
The AV tour [altavista.com] states that "AltaVista refreshes 50% of the results daily."
To be more precise it means that 50% of the "most popular pages" will be recrawled and refreshed at this 50% rate.
