You have to use it at your own discretion (after all it's kinda nice to find a page optimized for 1 engine rank well in others), but if you fall into any of the following categories, it would definitely be a good idea.

1. optimize the same content for different engines
2. use tactics that aren't accepted by all engines
3. use a relativley large amount of doorways
4. have had trouble with banning in the past
