Switching PHP Over To CGI

I've run into a snag with an application (written in C++) that uses DLs. I want to hook into it with PHP and they already have a php demo going which I caqn use through the command line but I need access via a browser. The newer versions of PHP don't allow dl usage through browsers but do allow it through CGI.

So I'm trying to get my PHP on an Ubuntu 13.04 OS switched from using Apache as the PHP handler to CGI doing it. I've tried a few step-by-steps but no success yet.

I've tried the following (the first are the most recent)
https://library.linode.com/web-servers/apache/php-cgi/ubuntu-10.04-lucid
[stackoverflow.com...]
[server-world.info...]

In a totally unrellated projected I noticed the phpinfo page of a GoDaddy hoste site had CGI/FastCGI as its server API while mine still reads Apache 2.0 Handler as it's server api even after all these configuration changes. How can I go about testing this set up to find out what is wrong?

Problem solved - added a test .cgi file and everything seems to be working
