Our smartphones track us daily.

 2:18 pm on Apr 22, 2011 (gmt 0)

breaking news today...

alright, so it says the Apple ones (iPhones) only track us when certain GPS apps are enabled. For maps or whatever..

Anybody know about the Google Droids ? same thing...or do they track us daily regardless if GPS is on or off ?

To protect their butts, of course they try to make it sound all innocent like their just doing it for anonymous surveys or to help traffic. but who really knows for sure..

not they I have anything to be suspicious over, I just find it kind of unnerving that after all this time its finally revealed publicly by both companies.

Since the cell phone companies are constantly recording this data for the TSA, what's the big deal? It is also now reported that the droid phones do essentially the same thing iPhones do. If you have a cell phone and it is turned on, it doesn't matter whether it's a smart phone or not it's being tracked by the cell phone companies if no one else. Much ado about nothing. If a person doesn't want to be tracked for what ever reason, turn off your cell phone and use copper wire phones for communication. As a last comment - The iPhone database is tracking by cell tower proximity, not GPS.

I have heard that since 9/11 all mobile phones sold in the US must track location via cell tower triangulation for positioning.

In fact, the phone companies can track and download the information even with the cell phone off.
