Is it really more mobile friendly?

I went about creating my mobile site, using [ready.mobi...] as my guide.

Then, when done, perfectly valid and tested on my phone, I was showing my friend on his phone, the page wouldn't load.

His phone, a pretty common one, couldn't handle the XHTML-MP doctype.

When I changed it to just a standard valid html page, it worked fine on his and mine, but didn't validate on rady.mobi and w3's validator either.

In addition, with the recommended doctype, the page wouldn't be valid in a browser like IE, whereas a valid regular html page would.

What's better, a perfectly valid website with the right doctype, or a very streamline, basic html version?

Thanks

Granted, both are HTML pages, but I'm talking about the doctypes.
