Should I launch and then continue to add product?

Msg#: 4490170 posted 2:10 pm on Aug 31, 2012 (gmt 0)

Hi everyone,

I am a college student trying to get my feet wet in eCommerce. I have talked to some proven successful ecommerce business owners and the niche I am getting into has a lot of opportunity to rank well with some great keyword phrases.

The one keyword phrase I am targeting is pretty broad and will cover all the products within my niche. This will be optimized for my homepage. I have some very specific keyword phrases I will be targeting that are brand specific, but those will not be my homepage phrases, but rather that brand's page with the brand's product.

I really want to get my site up a running and start getting the ball rolling since I plan on the first year just acquiring organic traffic through search engines and I am aware it can take up to a year for all of this.

However, I have around 500-1,000 products that I can sell on my site. Should I take the time before launching my site and get all of this product up, which could take months? I was thinking about just getting the top 100 product up and begin my SEO efforts and launching my site and then adding more throughout the life of my site.

What are your thoughts?

Start with the 100. Then work on maximizing site conversion. Follow the analytics. If the site gains traction, expand.
