Another Idea trying to Reach Reality
idea that is not yet produced or marketed but has big aspirations

Completely new to website design. I've done basic stuff with html and ftp a long, long time ago. Back when Netscape... oh never mind.

So I know I have this awesome idea for a site. It is fresh and new. As far as the Oracle (Google) can tell me there is not another operational site like my idea.

I found WebmasterWorld.com by reading about PoF (plentyoffish.com). I know the style of my site can be almost exactly like PoF and be a success. Simple easy to use and effective.

My site needs a simple yet effective interface that has user accounts and the ability to upload content, video and audio so it will be bandwidth and storage intensive.

Users will be able to enter their content in contests and view each others content and vote on it outside of any contests. Also users will be able to register to view content and not be required to submit any content themselves. Basically like Pof's voting feature.

There are probably 20 to infinity more things it needs to do and will do in the future, but to get a start basically I need to create a site that functions in a fashion similar to Pof.

This is not another dating site or adult site. The site is going to be "wheels off" fun.

Basically, I'm a novice and wonder if anyone knows of anything I can get that's premade that would function similar to PoF? If not that then does anyone know who may be able to program something like this?

I'm asking to save time. I'm pretty sure I can cobble something together in a few weeks after reading everything I possible can, which I'm doing already, but my cobbling will be on a novice level and will undoubtedly overlook many things seasoned designer/programmers already know to do or not do.

And like PoF I really don't have much $ to spend upfront. Also the site will attract a myriad of advertisers from brick n mortar to web.

Thanks for any pointers.

If anyone else has ever wondered what I've wondered I found Handshake Professional. I haven't researched it in depth yet, but it looks promising.

This way if my site works then I can rewrite the back end later if necessary.

Coolness!

What marcus did with the PoF site was exceptional ...

however his original 'how i did it post' that is here on WebmasterWorld really focuses on how he got traffic which was the key to his success, even he admited that the interface wasn't that great.

so good luck.

btw your nbc link doesn't work in the uk (content unavailable in your country)

Thanks for the reply I didn't know if I had stupid turned to 1,000 when I posted or if this forum has a tumbleweed problem.

Apologies for the failed link. I didn't think about country codes.

And I do not in any way expect to duplicate Pof's success. But reading about PoF after I finally figured out some sites have a framework similar to what I envisioned is how I got here.

It's been a few years since I wrote anything so clearing the cobwebs would have taken a few days. Now I get to learn an app that's open source instead of crash courses in new coding techniques and script integration.

I don't care about the interface all that much anyways, all I want is a stable effective framework for content uploading, categorizing and other functions. Once I learned how to ask the Oragle of Gog (Google) my query in the proper syntax I found exactly what I think will work almost out of the box.

This isn't the same clip and it wont have the same impact of being the only reply to my OP. It is the same SNL sketch though this is on utube and the uploader used a camcorder to film his tv so quality isn't all that great.
