welcome to WebmasterWorld i use an installation package such as webServ [sourceforge.net...] which is a pre configured install of php, apache plus more. there are other packages similar, basically they take all the hard work out of doing it - although you still have to doa bit of configuration

Hi DeKore, first of all Welcome to WebmasterWorld! Do you want to make your website visible to PCs within your own house, or to PCs on the Internet? If you want to make your site visible on the Internet you need a fixed Internet connection where the IP address doesn't change periodically. You also need to register a domain name for your site that points to that IP address. Very important if you want people from the Internet to view your site is to secure your computer with a firewall, the latest patches etc. Otherwise your computer runs a serious risk of being hacked. Using a personal computer at home as Internet server is therefore not recommended nowadays.

I wrote a fairly detailed post about hosting from home, but you need to ask yourself a few questions. Why do you want to host from home. If you are going to run public websites from your home server then this probably isn't the best idea. If I where you I would use a web hosting company. For only a few bucks a month it will save you a lot of headaches. [webmasterworld.com...] Mack.
