Your safest option is to upgrade to the newest version, and upgrade when ever a new version becomes available. Regarding setting permisions, is it not a case of the content being read from the database, as opposed to the footer being writen to? Mack.

Upgraded to the latest version of Wordpress several days ago and yet everyday I get links appearing once a day and in some cases twice. I then log into the cpanel and remove it from index.php. I think I will let my host know about it.

Why are you using cpanel to administer Wordpress? Are you talking about its file browser or something different? It may be your host thats infected? Mack.
