algorithms in order to create 'tools'

Hi guys,

I want to get started with web development by using it mostly to create a few tools..think internet marketing tools, just that in my case it'll be tools for a language learning website. For example: a tool that allows you to type in vocabulary and save it (and then ask you those vocabularies in a random fashion when you want to practice them), etc.

I just learned how the basic a* path finding algorithm works (using squares) and how to translate it into logical commands(exp?) in order to find out what learning algorithms really is like (I know its used for games, but I found it interesting)

Just to get an idea of how complicated things get: Are the algorithms I would need to learn in order to create things such as the simple tool idea mentioned above (using php and mysql for example) be on a similar level of difficulty or less/more advanced than that?
