The logo honestly looks like something that was created with MS Paint.
I think the (now) old logo was more of a logo and could have been represented in any colour. It was also a sign of trust that (at least my generation) grew up with. The new one just isn't attractive, nor does it really look like a logo.
I expect Microsoft to change their logo again within the next 5-7 years.

I think this new logo is very Windows 8. Whether Win8 will become a success, remains to be seen. I wonder how long this new logo will last, when Win8 does not become succesful.

I think it's an improvement from their old logo. Definitely simple... but I wouldn't expect them to re-invent the wheel.. they aren't known for that... Interesting to see where they are in 5-10 years...
