"I have a laptop that i want to network with an xp desktop at my house.
The xp desktop has a direct CAT5 connection to the DSL router. The wireless xp is in the other room.

I just want to do basic file and printer sharing?

Can these communicate and if so, does anyone have directions or a link to resources?

I havent spent much time with vista, so the tools are a bit different.... "

"That shouldn't be a problem at all. Just try it out first without the Windows firewall in place because I've found that can often be the problem. "

I tried with the Firewalls turned off, and still it would not work for printer and file sharing. Only Internet sharing is working.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld stlmo10.

Generally you have to make sure all the PCs are in the same Workgroup. Then you have to make sure the resources are explicitly shared. Here's a good article on File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista.

Open the properties dialog for the network adapters on both computers and ensure that the following protocols are ticked.
1) Client for Microsoft Networks
2) File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

Naturally, the way in varies between XP and Vista!

You need to install LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol) protocol ( downloadable from microsoft site ) and install on XO machine. after that, it works like magic.
