Gmail access problems with OS 9.2
Need some Mac troubleshooting pointers

I have a friend who is running OS 9.2 on a very old Mac laptop. He says that since this past Sunday he can no longer log into Gmail.

The account works from other PCs, but not from his ancient Mac. I'm not a Mac person, but I've been shanghaied into troubleshooting this for him. I'd like to ask for any troubleshooting tips you might have.

I have no idea what browser he's using, but it may be IE. I'm assuming I'll just flush the browser cookies, history, etc. After that what does one do with a Mac?

On a Windows machine I'd delete temp files and run cleanup software. Anything like that for the Mac? And remember this is an old OS.

Is there any chance that Gmail tweaked something recently that killed compatibility with older browsers/OS? Are there any reports of this?

As far as I am aware, the only browser that is still maintained for MacOS 9 is iCab.

Other available browsers are insecure and don't handle modern CSS and javascript properly.

Anyone using Explorer Mac will have noticed the web becoming largely unusable some time ago.

I would say it is likely that Google tweaked the settings and that nobody else noticed.

Bill,

It's been so long since I have used System 9, I really can not remember where things are. I believe in the Sysytem Folder, he will find "Preferences" and should look for anything with a reference to IE. Tell him to remove anything he finds, place them in a new folder, and remember where they came from if he experiences a major breakdown with the browser.

From Google, here are supported browsers for Gmail:

You can access Gmail at [mail.google.com...] wherever you have an Internet connection via a PC, Linux, or Macintosh (Mac) computer. To take advantage of the newest Gmail features, you'll need to use one of the following fully supported browsers:

* Google Chrome (download: Windows)
* Firefox 2.0+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
* Internet Explorer 6.0+ (We recommend Internet Explorer 7.0 for the best experience.)
* Safari 3.0 (download: Mac)

You can also get access Gmail -- but you won't have some of the latest features -- with any of the following browsers:

* IE 5.5+ (download: Windows)
* Netscape 7.1+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
* Mozilla 1.4+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
* Firefox 0.8+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
* Safari 1.3+ (download: Mac)

If you use a browser other than those listed above, you'll be automatically directed to the basic HTML view of Gmail. Basic HTML view works with the following browsers, as well as many others:

* IE 4.0+
* Netscape 4.07+
* Opera 6.03+

Regardless of your browser type, you must have cookies enabled to use Gmail. If your browser supports it, please also enable JavaScript.

I know this is obvious, but he is using ancient technology, kind of like using Windows 98.

Just a quick update on this one...

The first and only thing I tried was to get him to install iCab. Surprisingly that addressed all the problems he was having browser-wise. Not only could he log into Gmail, but now he also had the ability to view Flash in websites. He hadn't known that was possible.

Thanks for that tip! I think my next step is to donate him an old PC laptop. ;)

If you want to be really helpful give him one with Windows 3.1 installed.

I always found that a stable and reliable operating system, great with the Netscape 2 browser.

Good to know that iCab worked though.

I still use OS9 occasionally, but not for browsing
