Is there a way to submit directory listings (for local search) in a way that makes sure they are optimized? Meaning...Can you create crawler-friendly profiles, and then optimizing those listings so they drift towards the top of the search stack?
I am far from an expert in this area, but I read somewhere that this can be done.
Any truth to this? How can this be done?
Any feedback would be awesome.

I've called for something like you're describing previously -- a sort of open business profile which could be used by local search engines similar to how Sitemaps are used. So far, the big companies haven't come together to accomplish this, though.

What you can do is optimize all the common elements of your business's profile in order to serve you best in all directories/search engines, and then update your data in all the big ones individually, using that info.

Some common elements include:
Biz Name
Tagline or Description
Business Categories
Hours of Operation
.... etc.

Near impossible to have a standardized system because all the data providers have their own methodology/hierarchy in how they publish their data.

Getting them to agree to a unified data structure would be harder than ... umm ... finding out the Question to '42'
